To get steady, the free radical needs to either surrender or addition an electron from another atom (Tortora et al. 2006, p. 32), along these lines affecting the bodys capacity to keep up ordinary cell work (Rolfes et a. 2009, p. 391). Free radicals have been involved in the maturing procedure, coronary illness, the improvement of malignant growth and other interminable sicknesses (NCNZ 2009, p. 56). Cell reinforcements are regular aggravates that forestall or kill the harming impacts of free radicals, by giving an electron to the shaky particle without influencing their own solidness. Every nutrient and mineral cancer prevention agent capacities to ensure a specific piece of the body (NCNZ 2009, p. 56). What Are the Best Cause and Effect Essay Topics?

What Are the Best Cause and Effect Essay Topics? When you want to write cause and effect essay topics, there are a number of different topics you can choose from. As well as the famous, timeless novel by Charles Dickens - A Tale of Two Cities, there are a variety of other popular topic choices. One of the best parts about writing cause and effect essay topics is that, as you can imagine, each of these topics are already popular. Each of these topics has already been read and re-read many times over, so you don't have to reinvent the wheel. In addition to this, there are also a number of simple tips that you can use to make sure you make your cause and effect essay topics even more unique. So, take a look at the tips below. The first tip to keep in mind is to avoid writing on an original topic. No matter how interesting your topic might be, you should remember that when it comes to essay topics, originality doesn't really count. If you have an original idea, keep it to yourself, as it wil l not only make your essay harder to revise, but it will also make your topic seems like the less interesting of the two.Of course, if you do have an original idea, then why not go ahead and write a great subject? A great example of a great subject for a cause and effect essay would be, you guessed it, the subject of two people meeting on their way to work. What's great about this subject is that it's a completely unrelated topic and a completely unrelated group of people. This means that, even though both the group of people and the individual people might be very similar (all members of a small Catholic Church), you can still write a very compelling argument that makes both groups of people dissimilar and different. However, despite these two points, don't forget that not all essay topics are random events. While, yes, you might think that a topic that involves two people in a small Italian town meeting might seem a little random, if you're good enough at writing, you should be able to make the two people meeting feel more real and feel like they were truly two people who met on their way to work.Another thing to keep in mind is that, if you are going to write a totally unrelated subject (as in the case of two people meeting on their way to work), then you should really make sure you spend enough time doing research to make sure you know exactly what you're talking about. One final note here is that, when writing about a completely unrelated topic, you will need to make sure that you include an argumentative purpose or an argument that clearly states your point of view.

China Economic Performance from 2007-2016-Free-Samples for Students

Question: Discuss about the China Economic Performance from 2007-2016. Answer: Introduction In 1820, China was ranked the largest economy in the world but today its ranked the second largest. The Qing dynasty was approaching its 3rd century imperial dynasty in China during this period and this economy held the largest proportion of the worlds GDP. If measured in purchasing power parity terms, this economy is still the largest, but in terms of GDP it is the 2nd largest since we entered the 19th century. The reason as to why it fell behind is because of the increased industrial revolution in the western world. The catch up begun in 1978 at the onset of reforms; its GDP per capita was similar to that of Zambia; thus this economy was said to be very poor (Eskart, 2016). The average GDP growth experienced in China from 1978 to 2014 was 10% annually. This resulted in its GDP per capita rising by a 40-fold; this was from 155 US dollars in 1978 to 7590 US dollars by 2014. It is argued to have had an unparalleled achievement ass it raised over 800 people out of poverty. There is sti ll a need for more development in China as despite the achievement, its GDP per capita is still below the worlds average. The success of this economy was driven by it becoming the largest manufacturing hub; it specialized in labor-intensive manufacturing of cheap goods that were exported all over the world (FocusEconomics, 2017). This economy is a major trade partner with many other world economies. Since 2010, this economies has been ranked 1st in the exportation of merchandize goods, but 2nd in importation. It is ranked 3rd in the importation of commercial services, but 5th in exportation. Production Output Performance Analysis China Real GDP Viswanathan (2014) defined GDP as the money value of the total goods a country produced in a period of one year. It is a good measure of economic growth as it determines the level of the living standards. Viswanathan noted that an increase in GDP results in an increase in the standard of living. The measurement of GDP is done every year and comparison is done with the previous year to determine how much growth has taken place. At high value of GDP, the workers receives more compensation to meet some additional demands. GDP in nominal terms has not been adjusted for changes in prices as the case for the real GDP, China Real GDP Growth GDP growth has been said to be the percentage change of GDP from one period to the following period. It is a measure used in predicting the changes in economic performance. A fall in GDP growth rate requires the intervention by the policy makers. Fig: China Real GDP Growth Rate The graph for China real growth rate indicates a falling trend. Initially, its growth rate was very high (of above 10%). For the three years before the GFC, the growth rate was on a rising trend. It rose from 11.3% in 2005 to 14.2% in 2007. The 2007 record was the highest for the 10 year period. The rate fell to 9.6% in 2008 and 9.2% in 2009 respectively. The recovery in 2010 resulted in the rate rising to 10.606%, however, it was followed by a falling trend for the following four years. In 2014, this economy recorded the lowest real GDP growth rate of 7.3%. This economy has the worlds proportion of total population accounting to 18%. China Real GDP per Capita This is the value that shows the amount on money that any person is the economy is estimated to be earning. It is obtained by dividing the total GDP by the countrys total population (Pettinger, 2011). This measure is used as an estimator of the standards of living and commonly used for comparison between different countries (Amadeo, 2017). Fig: China Real GDP per capita Series 1: Argentina Real GDP per capita Series 2: China Real GDP per capita The trend for China Real GDP per capita is rising. Despite the impacts of the GFC that occurred in 2008-09, the china Real GDP per capita rose year after year from 2005 to 2014. This is an indicator of improve standard of living for China. In comparison to the 1st series for the Argentina economy, the living standard in China is better than that of Argentina. The improvement on China Real GDP per capita is rapid compared to the slow improvement on that of Argentina. Although the GFC did not have an impact on Chinas Real GDP per capita, Argentina recorded a lower value during the same period. The change in value for china had more than doubled by 2014. It was 18,436.12 in 2005 but 41,035.39 in 2014. The change in value for Argentina was only by a small proportion. Governments Measures The growth of China GDP has been attributed by its undefined objective of eliminating poverty; over the years, its GDP per capita has gone up significantly and this has acted as a booster to personal consumption. This economy has also centralized the control of the industrial production by owning the enterprises; this has enabled the government to be able to plan its output targets for which to follow. According to Eskart (2016), there was a gradual liberalization of prices under Dengs leadership (the price system became dual and allowed for a market price and a quota), the fiscal autonomy granted to the sub-national government was greater; the incentives were to stimulate investment and improve growth and expansion of the private sector. Its closed modern banking system has opened this economy to trade. Unemployment in China Unemployment Types Unemployment is present when people have no jobs, they are actively seeking, and any job vacancy available can be better for them. The typical types of unemployment are divided into four groups. Cyclical unemployment occurs time to time in an economy and is unavoidable. The economy has two business cycles; the boom and the burst period. The boom period is when many businesses performance is on the rise and thus the businesses are expanding; thus these businesses demand additional labor to facilitate the expansion. On the contrary, the burst business cycle means that there is poor business performance; when demand for goods is low, there is no need for a business to employ additional labor since the additional goods produced will be sold at a lower price. Thus businesses cut the number of their employees; those laid off become cyclically unemployed. Structural unemployment results from changing business structure; for a firm that opts to invest more in technology, efficiency is created and the new technology may enable a single person to carry out various processes at the same time (Grimsley, 2017). Hence, the demand for labor falls; this forces some workers to be laid off and become structurally unemployed. The same case applies for the case of increased manufacturing costs in a certain area; the manufacturing firm may find it difficult to operate in the said area and opt to shift its operation to a new territory where costs may be lower. This shifting may not be compatible with all the workers and thus they are left behind with no job and are said to be structurally unemployed. Frictional unemployment is the 3rd type resulting from information asymmetry; the person looking forward to be employed and has the right skills may not be aware of the employing companies, and also the employing companies are not aware of the existence of this person. According to Nash (2017), it takes time before this awareness is created; the two parties are on the search and may take time before they match. Its also the case for those people who cannot accept to do a certain job because its compensation is low and opt to remain unemployed waiting for a job with a better compensation. The last type is the seasonal unemployment mostly experienced in agricultural farms since labor in agriculture is not required all year long. The same case applies for tourism activities; there is less flow of tourists during the winter as compared to summer. Some people who offer various services to the tourists remain unemployed until the summer arrives. Unemployment Trend in China Fig: China Unemployment Trend The graph for China unemployment rate gives a falling trend for the 10 year period (2005-14). Before 2008, this economy was performing well and thus its unemployment rate was falling. It hit the lowest level of the 10 years in 2007 exactly a year before the global financial crisis. In 2008, the unemployment rate rose to 4.2%, a further rise and the highest record was made on 2009 (4.3%). A recovery was experienced in 2010 when the rate fell to 4.14%. The falling trend continued until 2013 when it started rising again. Generally, the China economy can be argued to be faced with a high unemployment rate challenge. Government Measures The role of the government it to maintain the employment rate at very high level. This can be ensured that there are plentiful of jobs for the whole population. This economys investment level is approximately 50% of its total GDP; for this reason, it has been creating many jobs opportunities. The economy has also put up some strategies to promote the expansion of the private sector as it is the major source of employment. The economy is one of the major importers of commercial services improving the service sector and thus creating additional employment. The government has also eased its regulations on business investors. For instance it has eliminated the minimum capital requirements for starting a new business (Heritage.org, 2017). This has resulted in increased investment in new businesses by investors and has thus created many jobs. Price Level Analysis Inflation in China Fig: China Inflation rate The above graph shows the changes in China inflation rate for the period between 2005 and 2014. The trend exhibited by change in China inflation rate is positive. Initially, the inflation rate was lower. The rate rose rapidly to 4.8% in 2008 and a further rise to 5.9% in 2008. The change in the inflation rate was negative 0.7% in 2009, and this is the lowest record made in 10 years. After the recovery in 2010, the rate rose to 3.3%, and a further rise to 5.4% in 2011. Since then, the rate started falling all the way to 2014 Typical Causes of Inflation There are three typical causes of inflation. One is the increased money supply that results from government policies. Increased money supply raises the income level for the households making them to demand more goods and services. Increase in demand without a corresponding increase in supply results in a price rise (Gillespie, 2007). This inflation caused by excessive demand is the demand-pull inflation. Secondly, the costs of production may contribute to rising inflation. When the raw materials prices goes up, for instance the oil price goes up, the production process for the companies dependent on oil becomes more expensive. Since the goals of businesses is to maximize revenue, they transfer the extra costs to the final end consumer through charging higher prices. The last cause is the built-in inflation which is caused mostly by the first two causes; when price rises, workers try to keep up by demanding increased wages, employees raises the cost of output to facilitate the same. Government Measures Maintenance of Price stability is a primary for an economy since price determines many operations on the economy. The government employs contraction ally monetary and fiscal policies to lower the inflation rate during a period when its very high. The government also employs the strategy of inflation rate targeting so as to ensure that there is a fixed range at which the inflation rate should be maintained. Wakatabe (2016) noted that this is the best measure for price stabilization. Conclusion Many world economies including China were greatly affected by the 2008-09 GFC. The recovery process has been a challenge to many economies. For instance, it can be concluded that China has not yet fully recovered from the GFC impacts since the unemployment level has not gone down to the same level recorded in 2007 before the crisis. This economy has succeeded in lifting a large number of people from poverty and this has contributed significantly to its GDP. The economy has implemented expansionary monetary and fiscal policies to stimulate economic growth. In addition, the government has also implemented policies to promote different sector in the economy which has helped in raising the employment rate. Despite the large population, China is an economy of rising GDP per capita. China has control over its unemployment rate since there are many policy implement that have led to the creation of many jobs. Thus, the unemployment rate may be projected to continue falling if the policies still stands in place. Inflation is not a big challenge for this economy as it is managed in the inflation targeting range. The inflation rate is falling and thus allowing room for the implementation of government policies References Amadeo, K. (2017). Why the World's Largest Economies Aren't the Richest. The Balance. The Truth In History Essays - E. H. Carr, Historiographers

The Truth In History We are all taught essentially the same things in school. We learn of the presidents and what they did and when they did it. But we know, as adults, that we did not get all the facts or even a portion of the correct facts in regards to history. In the essay, The Historian and His Facts, Edward Hallett Carr shares a bit of insight into the people who record history and write about it. We are given a deeper understanding of historians and just what it is they do and what they know. By doing so Carr gives the reader an opportunity to question much of the history that we are exposed to and taught. The historian Barbara Tuchman says that the most common question asked of historians by the public is whether history serves a purpose and whether we can learn from the lessons of history (Tuchman 608). Carr approaches the subject of history from an educated and clear standpoint. He makes the reader think about all the history that has been read while growing up (Carr 595). Carr, whether directly or indirectly, points out that so much of the history we receive is prejudiced by the historians (594). Another issue that the essay brought to mind and examined was the issue of the historians themselves (Carr 596). They also have many different preferences and prejudices. Some of those prejudices and points of view are very influential and very set. Historians have their own ideas of how great or wondrous a person or event was in history and therefore they will easily influence their accounts of the information provided to them. The historians themselves must be as unbiased and unprejudiced as they can be in order to give an accurate account of the information and present it to the student and researcher of history in a truthful manner. Tuchman argues against learning from history in a pragmatic sense (604). This approach would treat historical research as a technical process. Tuchman does not see history as sources of magazines, newspapers, and memoirs, but views them as raw materials. She argues that human beings are always and finally the subject of history. She defines history as the past events of which we have knowledge and refrain from worrying about those of which we have none (Tuchman 605). Tuchman believes that history is the record of human behavior, the most fascinating subject of all (607). She also believes that the main role of historians is to stay within the evidence. Only so many people can record any event in history and only a portion of these recordings are likely to be seen. We can probably rely on the dates and times of events, but those particulars are not necessarily what make up the meat of history. It is the people, the circumstance, and the events that make up history and teach us who we are and were we, as a people, have come from. The common people have always been an important part of history and without the recording of their information much of history is lost. Even people who all attend the same event will give different accounts of the occurrences, so how can we expect the historians to be completely infallible? We cant. It is the bias of historians that has kept us from learning of important facts throughout history. And when we do learn of the facts they differ from the next dramatically at times. Carr does an excellent job in addressing these issues whether directly or by inference. Tuchman also makes some valid remarks regarding the role and purpose of historian. In the end, the question is did we get all of the facts regarding history, or was it just the historians opinion of the events? History

The Agents of Erosion

The Agents of Erosion The process known as weathering breaks up rocks so that they can be carried away by the process known as erosion. Water, wind, ice, and waves are the agents of erosion that wear away at the surface of the Earth. Water Erosion Water is the most important erosional agent and erodes most commonly as running water in streams. However, water in all its forms is erosional. Raindrops (especially in dry environments) create splash erosion that moves tiny particles of soil. Water collecting on the surface of the soil collects as it moves towards tiny rivulets and streams and creates sheet erosion. In streams, water is a very powerful erosional agent. The faster water moves in streams the larger objects it can pick up and transport. This is known as critical erosion velocity. Fine sand can be moved by streams flowing as slowly as three-quarters of a mile per hour. Streams erode their banks in three different ways: 1) the hydraulic action of the water itself moves the sediments, 2) water acts to corrode sediments by removing ions and dissolving them, and 3) particles in the water strike bedrock and erode it. The water of streams can erode in three different places: 1) lateral erosion erodes the sediment on the sides of the stream channel, 2) down cutting erodes the stream bed deeper, and 3) headward erosion erodes the channel upslope. Wind Erosion Erosion by wind is known as aeolian (or eolian) erosion (named after Aeolus, the Greek god of winds) and occurs almost always in deserts. Aeolian erosion of sand in the desert is partially responsible for the formation of sand dunes. The power of the wind erodes rock and sand. Ice Erosion The erosive power of moving ice is actually a bit greater than the power of water but since water is much more common, it is responsible for a greater amount of erosion on the earths surface. Glaciers can perform erosive functions - they pluck and abrade. Plucking takes place by water entering cracks under the glacier, freezing, and breaking off pieces of rock that are then transported by the glacier. Abrasion cuts into the rock under the glacier, scooping rock up like a bulldozer and smoothing and polishing the rock surface. Wave Erosion Waves in oceans and other large bodies of water produce coastal erosion. The power of oceanic waves is awesome, large storm waves can produce 2000 pounds of pressure per square foot. The pure energy of waves along with the chemical content of the water is what erodes the rock of the coastline. Erosion of sand is much easier for the waves and sometimes, theres an annual cycle where sand is removed from a beach during one season, only to be returned by waves in another.

The Implications of the Great Recession of 2008 on U.S. Unionization Essay

The Implications of the Great Recession of 2008 on U.S. Unionization - Essay Example In other words, banks issued too much loans directed in real estate and as a consequence, prices were pushed up. In addition, Hetzel (2012) notes that debts grew faster than income and in the long run more people were unable to service their loans. This followed a financial crisis as the situation pushed banks to near bankruptcy and closure. One of the areas in the economy greatly affected by the recession of 2008 was employment sector. In light of the fact that a huge percentage of workers is presented by unions, this discussion elucidates the implications of the great recession of 2008 on U.S. unionization. To understand the implications of the 2008 great recession on U.S. unionization, it would be of significance to first describe unionization prior to the recession. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the percentage of workers represented by unions was at the highest level in the 1950s at 35 percent of the entire workforce (Hetzel, 2010). In 1983, figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that 17.7 million workers were unionized (Hetzel, 2010). This figure represented 20.1 percent of the total workforce in the U.S. In 2009, Hetzel (2010) notes that the figure had dropped to 12.3 percent of the total workforce. Though the number of union members was reducing from the 1950s, the rate was stringent in 2009 and 2010 after the great recession of 2008. In 2010 for instance, approximately 612,000 union memberships were lost (Tilly, 2010). Before explicating the implications of the 2008 recession on U.S. unionization, it would also be important to demonstrate its impact on the rate of unemployment. Tilly (2010), in a documented material directed to the Global Labor University Conference in Berlin in 2010, asserted that the rate of unemployment peaked in the period following the great recession of 2008. In fact, Tilly (2010) notes that unemployment rate rose to

Procurement - Assignment 2 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Procurement - Assignment 2 - Essay Example ent system is vital since the correct choice may help to avoid eventualities that might negatively impact on time, costs and quality; to ensure that the project’s goals are attained. One needs to consider a variety of factors from the project’s internal and external environment in which the industry operates. A point to note is that different projects may require different systems based on a project’s features (Hashim, Yuet, Chu, Hooi, Heng & Yong 2006). Procurement systems are divided into three categories namely; traditional, management contracting and design and build methods. These three categories have different influences on each factor. The following factors are may be considered in the construction of site in Chelmsford. Time, complexity, price certainty, government policy, price completion, responsibility, risk avoidance and familiarity of procurement methods (Hashim, Yuet, Chu, Hooi, Heng & Yong 2006). Time is of fundamental when deciding which procurement system to acquire for construction purposes. Time described here is from inception to completion stage. If the completion deadline is not met due to an inefficient procurement system, extra or overrun costs will be incurred by the contractor making the project expensive. The procurement system should monitor the lead-time schedules to ensure that the functional spaces are completed within the required time and start generating income. The client being a private firm, completion time of the project is truly crucial and of importance to them (Hashim, Yuet, Chu, Hooi, Heng & Yong 2006). Therefore, the procurement system must be comprehensive in planning and its schedules to achieve deadlines and other timelines required. Time as a factor is affected by the given procurement methods in the following ways. Design and build method is advantageous for a client who wants a quick return on their investment. The client may employ manageme nt contracting method in order to reduce the project

Canadas Changing Demographics and the Work Force Essay Example for Free

Canadas Changing Demographics and the Work Force Essay What has happened to Canada’s demographics over the past 50 years? Over the past fifty years, Canada’s demographics have been fluctuating significantly in terms of age and sex structure. During the mid-twentieth century, the population distribution pyramid was owned by the younger people and youth while the aged were not as highly populated. Now, the pyramid does not even resemble a pyramid; an increase in life expectancy, and a drop in fertility rates may account for such a drastic and effective transformation, and this sudden drop on the charts represents the large cohorts of the baby boomers, who are now beginning to play, perhaps even a slightly harmful, role in the economic workforce. In terms of statistics, these changes represent well the aging that has taken place in Canada over the past fifty years. Between 1956 and 2006, the median age of the Canadian population went from 27. to 38. 8 years, an increase of more than 10 years over a span of fifty years. By 2056, the median age is expected to reach 46. 9 years, or 20 years more than it was in 1956. In terms of demographics in the work force, during the third quarter of the twentieth century, there were almost 8 adults between 15 and 64 years of age in Canada for each person aged 65 years or over. However, the demographic dependency ratio for seniors in 2006 was just over 5 persons aged 15 to 64 years for each person aged 65 years and over. This ratio gives an approximation of how many elderly persons there are in relation to the potential pool of workers. During the last twenty-five years, the ratio has gradually yet significantly decreased to its current level. This downward trend could also continue into the future, according to recent population projections by expert analysts. Regardless of the scenario selected, most projections show a continuation of the decline of this indicator of population aging. According to the projections, in the year 2056 there would be only 2. working-age persons for each person aged 65 years or over, an even lower ratio than we are dealing with at the present moment. The Issue of Age Discrimination Age discrimination is defined, technically, as the idea of restricting persons from getting hired, promoted, or discriminated, in a position on the basis of age. It involves adverse work treatment of an employee based on a class or category that the employee belongs to – employees over age 40 rather than on the employees individual merit. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA) protects certain applicants and employees 40 years of age and older from discrimination on the basis of age in hiring, promotion, discharge, compensation, or terms, conditions or privileges of employment. In fact, any action that an employer takes that adversely affects a disproportionate number of employees over 40 is also age discrimination. Various different types of age discrimination do exist throughout the workforce. It would be sensible to be knowledgeable on one’s rights in terms of age discrimination to ensure that future conflicts as such are avoided. . Denying Employment: Denying ones rights on hiring and employment based on their current age (most cases involve the misjudgement of one’s capabilities due to inexperience and young age) 2. Position-Based Employment: When one is already working for a company and is denied another position, perhaps a promotion, within the company based on their current age. 3. Salary-Based Employment: While it is reasonable to assume that a person with more experience and education will apprehend a higher salary, even for doing nearly the same work as another person, there may be cases where that is not applicable. Some cases involve the act of paying more to one person while another is doing almost identical work yet is being paid less, yet one person is significantly older or younger than the other. 4. Housing-Based Solutions: This type of age discrimination is different than others, simply because it is not related to employment. Some communities specifically cater to older adults, but this is an exemption to housing discrimination allowed under the Housing for Older Persons Act (HOPA). This is true in many retirement communities, for example, for which often do not allow those younger than age 55 years to own property or live there. Current myths regarding the older work force employees There do exist, however, many myths about the capabilities of older workers in the field and how efficient they would be if they were to continue working in the workforce as they age. One circulating myth is that older people cannot or will not learn new material as efficiently as younger people, which is the most prominent one of the rest. A few others include the idea that older people are not flexible or adaptable to the work environment, that older people are less productive, and that older workers are more expensive than younger workers. There has been great debate on both sides of these theories, given that although people do accept that older people should not be discriminated against and limited in terms of the workforce, there do still exist aspects in their work habits and the resources needed to provide for them in the workplace which are less ideal than if younger people were to be hired instead. Some issues that may have to be dealt with throughout the workplace with elder people include more health protection, more resources to provide for them, and perhaps even more training to ensure that they are not slow in apprehending the skills necessary for the post (all of these factors also relate back to idea of more expenses in general). Labour shortage in Canada Figure 1. Statistics on the recent study on Canadian labour shortage by province Figure 1. Statistics on the recent study on Canadian labour shortage by province Finally, the case for job shortages in Canada became thinner recently with the most recent data showing vacancies actually fell to 200,000 at the start of the year, meaning there were 6. 5 unemployed workers chasing each opening. The fresh data is just the latest indicator that seems to undercut government and business arguments that Canada is facing a serious skills and labour shortage. Furthermore, given the fact that older citizens are beginning to retire from their positions, there is an increased risk of labour shortages beginning to emerge. Parts of the economy such as the food and restaurant, oil, and public services industries are beginning to face such issues, and this area of conflict may even continue to grow over the decades, perhaps even spread and expand to more parts of the economy. In terms of action against this issue however, steps have already been put into effect by different organizations and the Canadian government. Progress has been made to reduce barriers to work by providing tax incentives for working Canadians and by modifying Employment Insurance and Guaranteed Income Supplement programs to remove penalties for working people. Canadian Prime Minister, Steven Harper, responded that â€Å"there are certain cases in Canada where there are absolute shortages of workers† and that he will â€Å"ensure the programs put in effect are reformed so they may not be misused in any way. The government has already begun to take action to further reduce barriers to work for Canadians, given that Canada’s labour shortage is not only a skills shortage, but a person-shortage that will have an increasingly negative affect on the economic growth and prosperity of all Canadians. The diminishing young worker to retired elder-ratio should be a clear indication that a conflict is, and will be prominent throughout the next couple years or decades in Canada’s economy, and that action must be tak en as efficiently as possible to avoid a serious problem for both our current and future generations.

Wernicke’s Encephalopathy Essays -- Biology Health Medicine Papers

Wernicke’s Encephalopathy Introduction Carl Wernicke first described the syndrome in 1881. He referred to the disorder as acute superior hemorrhagic polioencephalitis. Some of the original patients he described included two male alcoholics and a women with esophageal stenosis. He described a clinic triad of encephalopathy, ophthalmoplegia, and ataxia. Unfortunately, most diagnoses are not made clinically but rather at autopsy. This suggests that the classic clinical triad is rare, or that clinicians do not properly recognize the symptoms. In some clinical studies, only one third of patients diagnosed with Wernicke’s encephalopathy (WE) presented with the classical triad. The majority of the patients presented encephalopathy (characterized by disorientation, indifference, and inattentiveness). Ocular motor abnormalities (nystagmus, lateral rectus palsy, and conjugate gaze palsies) occurred in 96%, resulting from oculomotor, abducens, and vestibular nuclei lesions. Gait ataxia presented in 87%, probably due to a combination of cerebellar and vestibular involvement as well as polyneuropathy. However, an autopsy-based study revealed that while 82% had mental status abnormalities only 23% had ataxia, 29% ocular motor abnormalities, and 11% polyneuropathy. The clinical triad was identified in only 17% of autopsy cases, and 19% sh owed none of the classic symptoms. This discrepancy between the clinical and autopsy-based studies is probably due to exclusion of atypical cases in the clinical series and the underestimation in the autopsy series of classic signs that were not properly elicited, recognized, or recorded (1). At autopsy the characteristic lesions of WK occur primarily in nuclei and structures surrounding the thi... ...e), 8 (2):107-113. 6. Butterworth, R.
